The New York Times reports that BMW has informed the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration of a potential fire hazard affecting 2008 to 2001 models 5 Series, 5 Series Gran Turismo, 7 Series , X5 and X6 equipped with turbocharged 8 or 12 cylinder engines resulting in a recall of 32,000 vehicles.  Although the recall is voluntary, Federal law requires that a manufacturer notify the NHTSA within 5 days of learning of a hazard or face penalties.
