Nursing Home Negligence
As our parents and grandparents age we are often faced with a difficult realization: the care they require is simply too great to be provided at home by family members. When that time comes we turn to nursing homes to provide professional nursing care for our loved ones and trust that the nursing home and its staff will see to all of their needs. Unfortunately, that trust is often misplaced and our family member is neglected while residing in the home, often resulting in injury or even death. Reports of medication errors, development of pressure sores and falls resulting in injury or death are all too common in nursing homes. Even worse are the continued instances where nursing homes are found to be understaffed or hired incompetent and under qualified staff to look after our loved ones. Some experts believe that for every one case of nursing abuse, exploitation or neglect that is reported, about five more go unreported and recent studies also suggest that between one and two million Americans age 65 or older have been exploited, neglected or otherwise mistreated by someone on whom they depended for care and/or protection. Fortunately, in Illinois the state legislature has passed a vigorous law called the Illinois Nursing Home Care Act which affords nursing home residents the right to sue a nursing home and its directors and staff when they fall victim to neglect or abuse. If you or a family member has been seriously injured or have suffered the loss of a family member due to neglect or abuse at a nursing home you’re likely to have many questions that need to be answered.
